Do I File a non resident State tax return in MO for a 1099-nec when I live in IL?

I live in Illinois, and I did freelance engineering design work in Missouri.  I received a 1099-NEC from that company.  Do I need to file a non-resident state tax return for Missouri since this was the only income I earned in that state?  The amount was below $7,000.

Thank you!

If you earned income, while working in MO, yes, you'll have to file a MO nonresident income tax return.

  • Per MO filing requirements, you have to file a tax return if you are a nonresident with less than $600 of Missouri income.
  • However, you'll be able to claim a credit, for the MO income taxes you paid, on your IL income tax return.
