Determine CA residency for foreign college student studying in CA

Hi there, I'm a graduating college student from China on F-1 visa. When I'm preparing my CA tax return, after filling out my personal info, TurboTax determined that I'm a part-year resident and filed form 540-NR.

I first came to CA for college in August 2016, and have been going back home to China during summer breaks and winter breaks. Wouldn't I be considered a CA resident according to “nine-month presumption” since I stayed in CA for over 9 months during 2019? Could someone confirm this for me?

Thanks in advance.

Determine CA residency for foreign college student studying in CA

@ariaj3 , do you still need help with this issue?

Another issue(?) I see is that you are using TurboTax  and therefore implying you are filing a form 1040  for the federal return.  Based on your post ( and absent any other facts ) you would be a Non-Resident Alien and an exempt  ( from counting days present ) person.   Since TurboTax does not support  form 1040-NR or NR-EZ,  how did you file your federal return ?
