2 W-2's from same employer. Both identical, boxes 17 are different amounts &box 15 says "Total State" on one &MD along w/state ID on the other. How do I go about this?

I have been reading that I need to make the 2 w2s into one when entering, but every time I add an extra line and leave boxes 15 and 16 blank there is an error or I have to double check it.

When adding an additional row, you will need to enter an amount in both boxes 15 and 16. Both boxes for 15 and 16 have to be allocated with the proper amount for each state.

  • Login to TurboTax Free Edition Online
  • Click Take me to my return or Pick up where I left off
  • Click Wages & Income, then click Edit/Add next to the W-2 that needs the state information revised
  • You will need to click add another row + (if you haven't already done so)
  • Once you have both rows available for boxes 15, state employer id number, 16 and 17, you will need to allocate each amount to the appropriate state based on what's on your W-2 that equals the "Total State" amount mentioned. See attached screenshot.

This partially answers a question that I have as well. I work in RI, but live in MA. The employer sent a W2 for each state, and box 16 is the same for both states, unlike in the example posted. Do I put that same number in each box, just with the state tax paid (box 17) different?
