1099-G from Colorado Doesn't Match Return

My 1099-G from Colorado does not match the return from last year.  The form amount is over $500 LESS than the refund on the state return I filed last year.  The refund actually deposited was the amount on my filed return.

Since the refund I received is more than the amount that is on the 1099-G form, I'm going with the actual amount claimed and refunded for my 2023 Federal filing.  Nevertheless, this feels awkward, and I sure hope someone can help explain what might have caused this.  I do not have any other income items (unemployment, relief, family leave, etc.) from the state.

1099-G from Colorado Doesn't Match Return

Is the amount in Box 2?   The total amount is refunds, offsets, and credits.   Did you itemize on your tax return or take the standard deduction?   If you took the standard deduction, it is not taxable, but if you itemized, some of it may be taxable.    Some reasons it may be different:

  • You chose to apply a portion of your overpayment toward the following year’s estimated tax
  • A portion of your overpayment was offset to a prior tax year or external agency having a claim against your refund
  • You received interest, which is reported separately on a Form 1099-INT
