If Box 6 on your 1099-NEC is blank but requires a 12-digit number, here’s what you can do:

Handling a Blank Box 6 on 1099-NEC

1. Check Box 5: If Box 5 (State Tax Withheld) is empty, you can leave Box 6 (State/Payer's State Number) blank (not $0). and  the system should let you bypass
2. If Box 5 has an amount withheld, you will need to contact the issuer for their State ID#.

Important Boxes on 1099-NEC

• Box 1: Reports nonemployee compensation, such as payments to independent contractors.
• Box 4: Federal income tax withheld, if any
• Box 5: State tax withheld, if applicable
• Box 6: State/Payer's state number, which is the state identification number of the payer
