Handling a Blank Box 6 on 1099-NEC
- Check Box 5: If Box 5 (State Tax Withheld) is empty, you can leave Box 6 (State/Payer's State Number) blank (not $0). and the system should let you bypass
- If Box 5 has an amount withheld, you will need to contact the issuer for their State ID#.
- Box 1: Reports nonemployee compensation, such as payments to independent contractors.
- Box 4: Federal income tax withheld, if any
- Box 5: State tax withheld, if applicable
- Box 6: State/Payer's state number, which is the state identification number of the payer
