Tax due is diff on 1040SR to be filed vs 1040 under Forms in TT.

I've run into a discrepancy.  When I print the PDF of 1040 SR before filing, it shows zero tax due.

When I look at the forms behind TT, the 1040 shows a tax due of $175, which indicates it's SE tax.

There is a sufficient NOL to wipe out that tax due.

What could be causing this diff?  The taxpayer is a missionary and has not paid SE before due to NOLs.  What could I be missing in not brining the forms down to zero like the PDF?

This is on a desktop PC.

Thanks in advance for any comments you can provide.

Does Schedule 2 show the SE tax on line 4 (and line 21)?

If so, that number SHOULD be flowing to line 23 of Form 1040SR.  If it isn't, it seems to be a program error.

A NOL carryover does not reduce Self Employment Tax.

As for why the 1040SR shows zero tax due, that is weird.  So line 24 of the 1040SR shows zero (or is blank)?

That's correct, it's zero.

Thanks for your reply on the NOL not wiping out the SE tax.

Guess I'll do some more digging.

Well, it's working now!

I don't know what I did or maybe I was looking at the wrong PDF.

But the SE tax is there on the 1040SR plain as day.  So, I'm a happy camper and do understand all of the solutions that were provided.

I really liked the last reply you made, we speak the same language.  I used to write code so I feel handicapped when I can't see the code.

This case is considered closed.  Thanks so much for your help.

Glad you got it working.  I've been following this thread.  By the way, in case you didn't know.....If you or your spouse is 65 or older it will automatically print on the 1040SR even if you see only the 1040 on the screen.   But in the Desktop program you can tell it which one to print.

If you use the Desktop program you can switch to forms and the Info Wks part II has a selection to select 1040SR or not.
