I received a 1099-NEC for a grant, is that right?

Should it have been a 1099-G instead?

1099 NEC is for self employment.

A 1099-G is for a state tax rebate payment, unemployment.
If you are talking about for going to college, then you would have received a 1098-T form.

What type of grant was it?  If you had to perform services for the grant, then it could be reported on the 1099-NEC.

Only government payments should be reported on the 1099-G.

The grant was from the city and it was an individual artist performer grant that was mainly to be used for equipment and such. Not for compensation for work. When I tried entering the 1099-NEC is took me to a screen to ask more information and it gave be choices to explain what the 1099 was for but none fit the bill and it wouldn’t let me go forward.

If you did not have to return the money not used for equipment and such, then this would still be for compensation for services as well.

So, what you will do is enter it as a 1099-NEC as self-employment and then deduct your expenses from the payment as well.

To enter your self-employment income click the following:

  1. Federal
  2. Income and Expenses
  3. Show More next to Self-Employment
  4. Start next to Self-Employment
  5. Yes, to you have any self-employment income or expenses
  6. Enter the type of self-employment work you do and you can select that you use your name for your business
  7. Click through a few more screens and you will get to a screen that says "Your XX info"
  8. Click Looks good
  9. Then you will come to a screen that says Let's enter the income for your business.  It will give you the option of 1099-NEC or Other self-employed income including the 1099K , cash and checks.  Here is where you will enter your 1099
  10. If you do not select one, it will not let you enter your income
  11. Enter your self-employment income on the next screen
  12. Continue and on the next screen click add expenses
