I got a 1099-NEC but I am not the business owner, just a freelance employee. How do I specify this on my taxes?

A 1099NEC is for self employment income.  Yes you are the owner of your own self employment business.  You are in business for yourself.  Use your own info.  The people or company that pays you is your customer or client.  You need to fill out schedule C for self employment business income.  You are considered to have your own business for it.  YOU are the business.

To report your self employment income you will fill out schedule C in your personal 1040 tax return and pay SE self employment Tax.  Here's a Schedule C  https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040sc.pdf

You can enter Self Employment Income into Online Deluxe but if you have any expenses you will have to upgrade to Premium or use any of the Desktop CD/Download programs.

You received Form 1099-NEC for non-employee compensation (you are considered an dependent contractor, not a business owner). The IRS considers income earned as an independent contractor, self-employment income. Refer to the IRS website Independent contractor defined for further explanation.

You are considered self-employed and will complete Schedule C which is how you report your self-employment income. The good news is that you can deduct ordinary expenses that you incurred making this income.  Follow the steps below to enter your income.

  1. Open TurboTax
  2. Select Wages & Income
  3. Select Self-Employment Income and Expenses
  4. TurboTax will guide you through the interview screens to help you enter your income and expenses.

For more information, refer to the TurboTax  article What is a 1099-NEC?

For additional information, review the TurboTax help articles:  What self-employed expenses can I deduct?  and How do I report income from self-employment?

You will ‌also be subject to self-employment taxes. Self-employment taxes and deduction are calculated on Schedule SE.  For additional information, please see the TurboTax article Self-Employed Federal Income Taxes.
