Dependent

I am my son's only parent. Turbotax is asking me whether I have an agreement with the other parent about claiming him as a dependent, and it won't let me proceed without answering the question.

Just answer no. It is asking if you have an agreement. You do not have an agreement. Say no.

Please review the interview relating to your son, particularly the number of months he lived at home.

The questions can seem a bit tricky.

No one else could have provided more than half the support for your son other than you.

Were there any special circumstances with your son last year such as being away to school or military? These temporary absences are still considered as living in the home.

Thanks for your response.

The part about his eligibility is done--He lived with me for 12 months, in the USA, and was disabled. I'm the only one who supported him.

It's the question about whether I have an agreement "with the other parent" that's the problem. There is no other parent. You have to answer "Yes" or "No." Without that, they indicate that they can't calculate what deductions you're eligible for. I read all the explanations, and none addresses the possibility that your dependent doesn't have another parent.

The agreement refers to whether or not you allow your ex, the noncustodial parent, to claim dependency. If you want to claim him as a dependent, answer no.

Perhaps I haven’t explained my situation well. There is no noncustodial parent. There is no -ex. I adopted my son as a single mom, so there’s no way that I can answer “Yes” or “No” to the question whether I have an agreement with someone who doesn’t exist. Can anyone help me?
