What do I do with the substitute form 1099-G and the refunds issued in 2016 that I receive for my husband and I?

You must report this income.

If the form 1099-G was for a state income tax refund, a STAR tax refund, or some other refund of tax paid to the state or local government:

  • If you took the standard deduction last year, this form will not impact your taxes.
  • If you filed Schedule A last year, then you must report this income.

If the form 1099-G was for unemployment income, then you must report it, whether or not you filed Schedule A.

There are other reasons to get a form 1099-G. If you uploaded last year's tax information, TurboTax will correctly calculate what counts for your taxes. On form 1040, the income appear on line 21.
