Wasn"t there a extension on having to take a distribution from your retirement account till 72?

Yes, due to changes made by the SECURE Act, if your 70th birthday is July 1, 2019 or later, you do not have to take withdrawals until you reach age 72 (IRS RMD).

 

You can still make qualified charitable distributions (QCD) if you are 70½ or over.
