Two years of IRA contributions on one 1099-R

We made IRA contributions in March 2022 for both tax years 2021 and 2022.  Because of income limitations, we did the backdoor Roth IRA conversion in 2022. The contributions were $6000 for 2021 and $6,000 for 2022. The 1099-R we received for 2022 shows a Gross Distribution of $12,000, with Box 7 as 2, and IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box IS checked. When I enter this 1099-R in TurboTax, it seems I'm getting taxed on the $6,000 contribution for 2021. How do I handle this in TurboTax? The 8086 form is generated, but item14 is zero and can not be edited.

Forms 1099-R report distributions, not contributions.

If you properly entered the $6,000 contribution for 2021 into 2021 TurboTax so that 2021 TurboTax generated the required Form 8606, the amount from line 14 of your 2021 Form 8606 would have carried forward to line 2 of your 2022 Form 8606.  If your 2021 tax return did not include the required Form 8606, you must prepare and file it.

Click the Continue button on the page that lists the Forms 1099-R that you have entered, indicate that yes, you made nondeductible traditional IRA contributions for years prior to 2021 and check to make sure that it shows your $6,000 basis carried in from 2021.
