I started my SSA benefits when I reached my full retirement benefits in 2023 at age 66 & 4 months. Later in Novemeber , 2023 after receiving my 10th payment of benefits I decided to withdraw my benefits before my December 2023 payment. I spoke with the local SSA office and representative about my concern for the crossover in time between withdrawal and per their request not to pay back the 10 payments that I had received prior to receiving their ( SSA’s) letter indicating the amount to be paid back which of course is totally available without receiving any statement from them. I noted my concern that they were going to potentially be creating an IRS event for not allowing me to simply pay off the amount in 2023 prior to the end of same tax year. They told me not to worry that my SSA-1099 would reflect that I paid back the full withdrawal in the correct year ( 2023). That is not what happened and I received a 1099 showing that I did receive the 10 payments of $2492.90 with a 2023 tax ramification for something that I had just paid back in full! So I called them back multiple times now and have repeatedly been told for 9 months now that they would rectify my 1099 for 2023.
Still never happened and I have to file my 2023 CA and Federal tax returns here ASAP. What recommendations do you have here for me in this situation? Thank you. Eneg56
