I received a SSA-1099 for benefits repaid to Social Security. Where do I input the information for the amount i repaid?

If this repayment is made for prior years, and the figure is $3000 or less, it is a miscellaneous itemized deduction and can no longer be deducted due to the new tax law TCJA.

To enter an amount more than $3,000, here are the steps:

  • Sign into your account, select Pick up where you left off
  • From the top, select tab Federal taxes / Deductions & Credits
  • Scroll down to section Other Deductions and Credits, to the right, expand Show more
  • Scroll down to Other Deductible Expenses, select Start, follow the prompts
  • On-screen, Less Common Expenses, answer Yes
  • On-screen, Enter More Expenses, enter your repayment amount

The repayment is for benefits paid to us in previous years.

I REPAID SSI SO  THAT I COULD RE START MY SOCIAL SECURITY AT A LATER DATE. I RECEIVED $6,443 IN 2019 AND PAID BACK $14,759. WHICH INCLUDED $8,316 FOR SSI RECEIVED IN 2018. LOOKS LIKE I NEED TO AMEND MY 2018 TAX RETURN.
