Retirement plan distribution no 1099R

Financial institutions have until January 31st to send you Form 1099-R, so you definitely should have received it by now.  In most cases, you can access your Form 1099-R through the website of the Financial Institution, typically in a "tax info" or "year-end statements" link.  If you are unable to access it through the website, try contacting the Financial Institution directly.

If you have tried everything and are unable to obtain your Form 1099-R for the Retirement Plan Distribution, you will need to file a "Substitute Form 1099-R" using your payment stub, or any records you have regarding the distribution.

Please follow the instructions in the Turbo Tax FAQ below to create a Substitute Form 1099-R:

  • Sign in to your account.
  • Click "take me to my return" (unless already in return)
  • Select "tax tools" and then "tools" from the left side of the screen
  • Click "topic search", type in form 1099-R and click go
  • On the next screen, click another 1099-R and click "I'll type it in myself"
  • Check the box: 1099-R withdrawal of money from 401(k) or other retirement plan and check the box at the bottom "I need to prepare a substitute 1099-R"
