Yes, if he had NC state taxes withheld, he probably will be entitled to get a refund. However, he will also have to file a federal tax return. He will not owe any federal tax, but NC requires it to be filed.

In addition, if he selects Yes, someone else can claim him as a dependent, you can still claim him as a dependent on your tax return.
