Is Disability retirement pension as a pubilc safety taxable?

I was injured during a rescue in 1982 and retired with a disability which progressively got worse and has prevented me to do any work since 2009. I was originally told that my disability income is tax free. Your program keeps telling me that all but $3,000 is taxable, however. I don't have to pay as the program is, but I want to know how to do it correctly and not leave information that is asked for, out. I haven't ever been audited but misrepresenting this will not be good if I do! I have this trouble with your program every year I've used it and I'm going to someone else next year if you can't fix it.
