Foreign Government Pension - Italy

Can anyone tell me how and where to put in 2023 Tax Return my Italian Government Pension that under the treaty  of US and Italy is taxable only in the country (Italy) where the service was done ?

Reading lots of different posts on the subject of foreign pension I'm confused.....

Thank you.

You would first report the pension income by entering a substitute Form 1099-R in TurboTax as follows:

  1. Go to the personal income section of TurboTax
  2. Find the Retirement Plans and Social Security menu option
  3. Start or Update IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R)
  4. Choose Add Another 1099-R
  5. Choose I'll type it in myself
  6. On the screen that says Tell Us Which 1099-R You Have choose I need to prepare a Substitute 1099-R
  7. Enter the distribution amount in box 1 of the substitute 1099-R and the taxable amount in box 2(a)

Then, you need to subtract out the portion of the pension income that is exempt from tax per the treaty as follows:

1. From the Federal menu in TurboTax find Wages and Income

2. Find Less Common Income

3. Choose Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C

4. Choose Other Reportable Income

5. Enter a description of the treaty and the adjustment as a negative number

You must complete Form 8833 Treaty-Based return position disclosure and include with your return. That form is not available in TurboTax, so you will need to complete that separately and attach it to your tax return that you would mail in. Here is a link to the form:  Treaty income adjustment
