Even though the amount is small, you should include the Form 1099-R distribution as part of your tax return.  The IRS has a copy of the form and you may be contacted by the IRS by letter if it is not included.

As you go through the follow-up questions after entering the Form 1099-R, you may qualify for an exception to the early distribution tax due to disability and leaving your job.  However, this does not mean that the Form 1099-R should not be reported.

Use these steps to get started:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “1099-R” and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to 1099-R
  • Click on the blue “Jump to 1099-R” link
