I did ,what I thought was participate in cryptocurrency trade signals. I transferred money to a trading platform and participated in trade signals provided by the "team of analysts". After the time frame, a few months for me, was over I was to be able to withdraw my profits. Commissions had to be paid, but this couldn't be paid from my trading account, had to be sent separately. (yes red flag). Still thinking this was legitimate, I paid it and was told that the money would automatically be released to transfer to my bank account. Instead of money being released I get a message saying that the taxes have to be paid first to the company to pay the taxes to the IRS before it can be released. I live in Canada, and will have to pay tax on any capital gains but was being told every region is different and it is required. I did not pay the money, I am 98% sure that unfortunately I have been scammed. There is a little glimmer of hope that this is true and I would get the profits if I paid the money. Hindsight there were red flags but unfortunately I got caught up in the excitement of making money.
Sorry for the long post but has anyone dealt with this or know anything about having to pay the tax first before profits will be released? I was told that the "money" that is supposedly in the account can't be used freely to pay the tax. Also was told that it is because I am Canadian and it has to be paid first, US residents could withdraw their profits and then pay.
Thank you

Yes, you are being scammed. If the exchange is required to withhold taxes (as might be the case under US law if the exchange was operated in the US but the customer is not a US citizen), there is no reason the exchange can't withhold the taxes from the cash payout before releasing the rest. And, this kind of backup withholding is uncommon under US law. I don't know about other countries, but there still should be no reason the exchange can't take the tax withholding from the payout.
Thank you for your response. Part of me was hoping that I didn't get scammed, it was too good to be true and easy to get caught up in what I hoped was true. I asked an accountant here in Canada who has dealt with cryptocurrency and said right away that it is not true or the law that I would have to pay tax to the IRS first and he was 99% sure it was a scam.
what would the trading platform be?
regards
jz
It was True Capital. Also used True Ventures in communications. The website is no longer accessible because I was told " the trading platform has officially entered the maintenance phase to make full preparations for listing on the App Store"
