Can cost basis for silver I-shares be listed as zero?

I have now read through the erudite suggestions as to how to treat a gold or silver ETF.  I must admit to feeling overwhelmed by the thought of trying to convert my tiny silver I-share transactions (averaging just over a dollar) to come up with a basis.

Will I be penalized in any way (apart from my own pride) if I list the cost as zero?

your basis, after rounding, is probably zero anyway.
