Can an elderly parent in my care be claimed as a dependent . He receives social security and va disability?

Yes, a parent in your care may be able to qualify as your dependent, even if the individual does not live with you. The main requirements are that you must furnish over 1/2 of the person's support and their income is under $4,200 for the year.

 

Non-taxable social security and non-taxable disability income would not count for the $4,200 income test.

 

I suggest you enter the individual in TurboTax if you think they qualify and the answers you give to the questions will sort that out.
