Box 2b of Form 1099-R does not show anything "Checked", only "Reads" "Total Distribution". Does this mean I have a Total Distribution, or not...since there is no "check"?

As a military veteran, who receives standard military retiree pay, it is unclear to me if I am provided a Total Distribution. Should this box actually have a "Check" (literally) in this box, or remain empty if neither applies?

No, for a regular military retirement pay the "Total Distribution" should not be checked.

If there is no check/"X" in the box then that box does not apply.

So if your 1099R shows an empty box 2b "Total Distribution" you did NOT get a total distribution.
