SS that say valid for work with DHS authorization only.

I have a client with a SS that say valid for work with DHS authorization only. He had work permit, but his work permit expired at the end of 2025. Can he get tax credits such as CTC or EITC?

No, you cannot claim Earned Income Credit or the Child Tax Credit for any tax year in which the work authorization was expired. The IRS specifically states: To qualify for the credits, you (or your spouse, if married filing jointly,) and each qualifying child must have a Social Security number that is valid for employment in the United States and issued before the due date of the tax return (including extensions).

The SSN itself does not expire, but the condition for its use for the purpose of claiming these specific tax credits is tied directly to the validity of the DHS work authorization.

Your can find this information in IRS Publication 596 and the IRS Child Tax Credit information page.
