Contrary to popular beliefs and misconceptions, your qualification for a stimulus payment is based on your filing status for tax year 2020. The IRS has just been using the 2019 and 2018 returns as guidance, in order to get the checks out in the most timely manner possible. I'm sure there will be quite a few who received the stimulus payment, who will have to pay it back when they file their 2020 tax return.
If when you file your 2020 tax return, your sister qualifies to claim you as a dependent for tax year 2020, then you will "NOT" get a stimulus payment. Period.
However, if you file a 2020 tax return and nobody else on this planet qualifies to claim you as their dependent, then you will get your stimulus payment AT THAT TIME and no sooner. Now understand that it does not matter if your sister (or anyone else) actually claims you as a dependent on their 2020 tax return. If anyone else just QUALIFIES to claim you, then you will not receive a stimulus payment. Doesn't matter if they actually claim you or not.
