Overseas Military, new baby without SSN for taxes

Can I file the taxes without him and file for him once we get his SSN in 6-12 weeks or can we claim him next year for 2016 and 2017?

Overseas Military, new baby without SSN for taxes

Yes, you can. But you have a couple of choices...You can file without the baby now and amend your tax return once you do have SSN OR you can just file an extension and file your tax return later.

If you are in the military stationed abroad or are in a combat zone during the tax filing season, you may qualify for certain automatic extensions... If you overseas, your extension to file is until Oct 15 (you still must pay by April 15th).  If you are in a combat zone, the extension is longer...you don't have to file or pay until 180 days after the end of your active service in the zone.

The exemptions for combat zone soldiers and active military overseas are granted automatically, but you are required to submit IRS forms to request an exemption when you do file a return...

If you are filing for the two-month extension for active overseas personnel, you must file a statement with your return (at the time that you file) proving that you were on active overseas duty during the entire tax filing deadline date. If you are claiming the 180-day filing and paying extension for combat zone personnel, you can either contact the IRS to let it know of your status at combatzone@irs.gov, or call the IRS at 1800-829-1040. If you are filing a general 180-day filing extension for being out of the country, file Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Tax Return, before April 18th (can do it in TurboTax).
