We traveled to another state from Virginia to sell a rental property. Can we count the travel as an expense for the sale? Can we use the business mileage rate.

Yes and Yes, as long as the primary purpose of the trip was business (sell the real estate).

The standard mileage rate is 54 cents a mile in 2016.
