You should have receive a Form 1099-R from the retirement account administrator that sent you the check. This would be taxable income to include on your return. Please contact the administrator or the estate attorney if this is the case to clarify the situation and resend you a 1099-R if necessary.

However, if this was a straight inheritance from the estate, that income would not be taxable or entered in your return.

If you have additional questions or details regarding this, please feel free to post in the comments for further clarification.

Here's how to enter your 1099-R in TurboTax if you receive one in the future:

1.       Open (continue) return if you don't already have it open.

2.       Inside TurboTax, search for 1099-R or 1099R (lower-case works too) and then click or tap the "Jump to" link in the search results.

3.       Answer Yes on the Your 1099-R screen, then click or tap Continue.

 ·         If you land on the Your 1099-R Entries screen instead, click or tap Add Another 1099-R.

4.       Select how you want to enter your 1099-R (import or type it in yourself) and then follow the onscreen instructions.

How was this reported to you?  What kind of investment was it? Was it from Sam's sister's retirement? Did you receive stocks that you sold? Let me know.

I do not think we received a 1099, but it was money from a retirement account, not stocks.
