If I have not had a Schedule D each year for a capital gains loss, why must I do one this year?

Turbotax says I must upgrade to Premium. Why? Just to provide a Schedule D.

If you have investment sales, whether gain or loss, you have to use Schedule D. If you had investment sales in past years you also would have needed Schedule D. There is no way you could have reported investment sales without Schedule D.

I don't know what you mean by "a capital gains loss." If you mean that you had a capital loss carryover from the previous year, that also requires Schedule D.
