I purchased stock in a private company in 2014. I sold all of that stock at a loss in 2019. I will not receive a 1099-B. How do I enter the loss into Turbotax?

Use the following steps:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “investment sales” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to investment sales
  • Click on the blue “Jump to investment sales” link and enter your information

This will take you to the correct section of your return to enter the details of your sale.  One of the first questions you will see is to ask if you have a Form 1099-B.  Answer No and then indicate what type of investment you sold.  Then you will enter the details of your sale such as your cost basis, date acquired, date sold, proceeds of the sale, etc.
