I interned at a start up in 2016 and was paid in stocks. That company was sold and I received payments in 2022 via a 1099NEC. How do I report this money

I tried reporting as 1099NEC and one of the question TT asks is "when did I start working ". Since I worked in 2016 at this firm, I tried entering 2016 but it says the data has to be in 2022.

Please clarify as to whether you reported the value of the stocks as taxable  income when you interned with the start up company in 2016.

Did you hold the stock certificates?

Were they stock options?

The document indicates you were paid as an independent contractor for your work with stocks.  In that case you should report it as self employment income.  You can enter 2022 to complete the tax return if this is the case.  It will be entered correctly on your tax return.
