Are mortgage payments on rental property considered an expense?

The IRS does not allow me to include the mortgage payment as an expense? Am I missing something?

Are mortgage payments on rental property considered an expense?

No. The only part of the mortgage payment you can deduct, is the interest paid as reported on the 1098-Mortgage Interest Statement you received from the lender for the mortgage on that loan.
