Sell home and move for medical resons.( Re. Pub. 523)

We sold our home, moved and purchased another home, all this for medical reasons. (See quote below.)

Our expenses well exceed the std. deduction of $27k

Yet we can’t access schedule A and can’t enter these deductible costs.

Please direct us on to how to enter these deduction.

---------------------------------

From Pub. 523: Moving expenses, as per pub. 523:

“Must meet requirements: moved to obtain, provide or facilitate diagnosis, cure, etc…..”

Pub 523 deals with exclusion of capital gain when selling a home under certain conditions. It doesn’t address  a medical deduction for the expense of moving.

Sell home and move for medical resons.( Re. Pub. 523)

Thank you for your reply.

Below is an excerpt of the section I was referring to from p523, page 6:

Does Your Home Qualify for a Partial Exclusion of Gain? If you don't meet the Eligibility Test, you may still qualify for a partial exclusion of gain. You can meet the requirements for a partial exclusion if the main reason for your home sale was ......., a health issue,....

Health-Related Move :You meet the requirements for a partial exclusion if any of the following health-related events occurred during your time of ownership and residence in the home. • You moved to obtain, provide, or facilitate diagnosis, cure, mitigation, or treatment of disease, illness, or injury for yourself or a family member. • You moved to obtain or provide medical or personal care for a family member suffering from a disease, illness, or injury. ........ • A doctor recommended a change in residence for you because you were experiencing a health problem. • The above is true of your spouse, a co-owner of the home,....for whom the home was his or her residence.

Yes, I read the same section.  Again, you can exclude capital gain income if you sold the home for a profit but there’s no medical itemized deduction on Sch A for the cost of moving.
