In Canada, rent and general living expenses are not tax-deductible expenses that can be subtracted from your income to reduce tax owed. However, they may qualify you for refundable provincial tax credits (such as the Ontario Trillium Benefit), and certain moving expenses are deductible if you moved to attend school.
In TurboTax, you don't list rent as a "deduction"; you list it to qualify for a refundable credit. If you pay rent in Ontario, you can use your rental receipts to apply for the Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit (part of the Ontario Trillium Benefit) to get money back, particularly if you are low-income.
Ontario (Ontario Trillium Benefit): This is the most common. In TurboTax, go to the Provincial section and complete the ON-BEN form.
If you lived in a house/apartment: Enter the total rent paid and the landlord's name.
