The extension gives you until October 15, 2026, to file your taxes without getting a failure to file penalty.  You don't get extra time to pay your taxes so you must pay any taxes that you may have that are due by April 15, 2026, so you won't be assessed the failure to pay penalty.   Refer to the TurboTax Help article How do I file an IRS tax extension? for instructions. If you need to file a state extension, review the article How do I file an extension for my personal state taxes?

It isn't required, it is easy to get at IRS individual online account. You can use last year's AGI instead.
You should be able to e-file the extension from the Desktop App. Please make that happen for the next release.

It is 2026, some 3 years after MikeD15 reported this and I'm running into the EXACT SAME INCORRECT CALCULATION.  I nearly had a cardiac seeing the tentative / working tax I owe, assuming TurboTax just knows how to handle MFS, especially for a fairly common transaction like a home sale.  I'm utterly dumbfounded I have to figure out a workaround or hack it.

When trying to submit an efile I get a submission duplicate error  Oh, if it doesn't let you actually efile, that sounds like that is a TurboTax message not a rejection.  Was it like a popup?   TurboTax may think you or "someone" has already submitted a return with that SSN based on its own database.   Is it just your SSN on the return, or does it also have spouse and dependents?     @ MarilynG1  Do you think this is an internal error message from TurboTax blocking submission, and if so, do you have information on it, and what steps to take?    Thanks.

Sorry, I was not clear enough before.  I (the mother of the dependent) need to amend the return because the child is not marked as a dependent.  My tax return was rejected because the child did not mark herself as a dependent and it looks like I am trying to file a non-dependent on my tax return.  In the app, the amend return does not appear.  Is there a delay in being able to amend the return?  The federal says it has been accepted.
Calling Customer Service is a joke too.  I just got walked through a bunch of questions, then it hung up without answering what I called for.  $180 down the drain.
