I’m not understanding does it automatically come out or do we need to do something to assure it comes out social security I’m talking about?

Hi TurboTax Community, I need some guidance regarding my son's tax filing. He is currently in the U.S. on an F1 visa and working under OPT. Unfortunately, he mistakenly filed a resident tax return (Form 1040) using TurboTax, but as an F1 student, he should have filed Form 1040-NR as a nonresident. My questions are: 1.Since TurboTax does not support Form 1040-NR, how can he amend or correct his tax return? • Will he still  receive a refund from Turbo tax for the fees he paid? • Which software is best suited for preparing and filing Form 1040-NR? • Can he claim the U.S.-Bangladesh tax treaty benefit as a student under OPT while filing Form 1040-NR? Any help or advice on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance.

It's not clear what you did. It seems that you filed your tax return by mail, since you are talking about USPS tracking. But you cannot pay the tax you owe by direct debit if you file by mail. Direct debit is only available with e-filing. CatinaT1 thought you e-filed, but that does not seem to be the case. How exactly did you arrange for "direct withdrawal" from your bank? Did you use IRS Direct Pay or EFTPS? Or did you initially tell TurboTax you wanted to e-file, and select direct debit, but then print your tax return and file by mail instead of e-filing? If that's what you did, your direct debit information did not get sent to the IRS. The information is not on the printed return, as you can see by looking at your copy of the Form 1040 that you mailed. TurboTax would not have offered direct debit as a payment method, or allowed you to enter direct debit information, if you had selected "File by mail."

I have used Turbo for several years and have been happy with the product.  This year I used it and was surprised I owed almost $4000 despite voluntarily withholding so much.  I trusted Turbo, though, and e-filed.  A few days later, I went to my pension website to increase my withholding, and had to get some info from my copy of the 1040.  Whoa!!!  My dividends and interest had both been doubled, increasing my income a lot.  I decided to look at everything.  The amount of my 2023 Social Security had been used…not the 2024 amount I entered.  The total of my credits was about $1200 less than it should have been.  I did a paper 1040SR with the corrections and filled out a paper 1040X…instead of owing $3600, I was due an $1800 refund.  I paid $12 to mail the packet to IRS.  I must now wait as long as 4 months for the refunds.  I am so not a happy camper!!!  The Turbo Premier program was $115.  So much for ease of filing and maximum refund…gonna go it alone next year.

You simply need to enter Quebec as your province of residence on December 31st, and when you enter your T4 slips, if the province is Ontario, you will need to choose the province of Ontario. If you do not have a Relevé 1 slip from Quebec, you simply skip it.     You can transfer to the Province of Quebec up to 45% of the income tax shown on information slips issued to you by payers outside Quebec. In the provincial section under Other Quebec Credits, check the box that says "Tax transfer for residents of Québec who earned income in another province and from which federal tax was deducted".      Thank you for choosing TurboTax
