I filed by taxes using TurboTax last year. I received a CP28A notice from IRS stating that my mortgage interest deduction that was used in the filing was incorrect. I went through my 1098 and confirmed I entered the information correctly using TurboTax. The issue was I had paided down a significant portion of principal last year (from sale of another home). Here is a breakdown of my situation: Outstanding principal at the start: 1,995,215. Ending principal: 590,359. Interest paid during the year was: 103,886. TurboTax ended up using First and Last Balance method and computed the qualifying interest for deduction to being 60,254. From what I read online it looks like this might not be correct way to do since the rule shouldn't be applied since I pre-paid more than a month of principal. I found that using weighted monthly average 55,268 (since the pre-payment was done in July). So my questions are 1) What's the right way to calculate the interest deduction for my situation 2) Can I use TurboTax software to file an amendment (if I need to do so)? Kindly advice. Thanks.

When will the income section be available? I set it to alert me by email when it was available and it did, but I have been checking almost every day since the beginning of December and it still says not available yet on the app and the online version. I have uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times.

If you take out a reverse mortgage, the application fee, mortgage insurance, and closing costs paid up-front aren't tax deductible until actually paid off (usually when you repay the reverse mortgage). Therefore, you will be unable to deduct the interest on the reverse mortgage until it is actually paid off (at some point). In addition, Generally, you will not be able to deduct your mortgage insurance premiums and most of your closing costs.   For further details, see this page: 👉 https://reverse.mortgage/interest-tax-deduction   Regardless of whether you can deduct the amount you sent in to a reverse mortgage or not, it's always best to save your closing documents and seek advice from a certified public accountant (CPA) regarding your individual situation.

When you enter your dependent child (ren)  and enter the income you earned from working, if you are eligible for the child tax credit and/or the additional child tax credit, they will be added automatically and the software will create the necessary form 8812.   Make sure you have entered your child as a dependent in My Info, and that you have entered the child's Social Security number.    Careful— do not say that your child’s SSN is not valid for employment.  If your child was born in 2025 make sure you said he lived with you the whole year.  There is an oddly worded question that asks if the child paid over half their own support.  Say NO to that question.   Have you entered income from working in 2025?  If not,  you will not receive an income tax refund based on having dependent children.     The maximum amount of the child tax credit is now $2000 per child; the refundable “additional child tax credit” amount is $1700.   In order to get that credit, you have to have income from working.   Take the amount you earned from working.   Subtract $2500.   Multiply the rest by 15%.  That is the additional child tax credit per child that you can get—- up to the maximum of $1700 per child.   If the amount you earned from working was low, you will not get the full $1700 per child.    If your child is older than 16 at the end of 2025, you do not get the CTC.  But you may still get the non-refundable $500 credit for other dependents instead.   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/taxation/child-tax-credit/L2lNhfGDl_US_en_US?uid=m68dfq2u   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/taxation/additional-child-tax-credit/L6xFeMFEf_US_en_US?uid=lqnuygah https://www.irs.gov/help/ita/does-my-childdependent-qualify-for-the-child-tax-credit-or-the-credit-for-other-dependents     And for the Earned Income Credit—-   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-credits-deductions/qualifications-earned-income-credit-eic-eitc/L7w4BFP32_US_en_US?uid=m62rmz09   https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/individuals/earned-income-tax-credit/use-the-eitc-assistant   https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p596.pdf   Look at your 2025 Form 1040 to see the child-related credits you received   PREVIEW 1040 https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-return/preview-turbotax-online-return-filing/L77WCkvnu_US_en_US?uid=m681fkhr   Child Tax Credit line 19 Credit for Other Dependents line 19 Earned Income Credit line 27 Additional Child Tax Credit line 28

It was accepted like 6 months ago. The check refund website at the IRS is currently down and I’ve been unable to get any answers. They sent me an email asking for the exact same documents that I uploaded to turbo tax in my initial return. I complied and uploaded those documents and now I’m just waiting in the wind. I’m wondering if anyone else who used the credit card deduction tool has the same issue since thats the only thing I did differently this return.

My computer is unable to support Windows 11, and there is no reason to limit installations to Windows 11 other than maybe a little bit of a hassle for your support team. There are still tons of people on Windows 10 and you're losing customers by not supporting it.   Thank you for your consideration.

You cannot e-file any tax return at this time.   It is too late to e-file a return for 2024 or any earlier year; e-filing has been permanently closed for past year returns.   E-filing has not yet opened for 2025 returns.  The IRS will not begin to accept 2025 returns until late January.   If you are trying to file a 2024 (or earlier tax year) return, it has to be filed by mail.  Print it, sign and date it in ink, and mail it.   When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.   Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
