New York State gives very clear direction on how to calculate the tax due. Here is the tax rate schedule directly from tax.ny.gov https://www.tax.ny.gov/forms/html-instructions/2024/it/it201i-2024.htm#nys-tax-rate-schedule Here is the correct calculation and what should be reported back from TurboTax into Line 39 (the 100,237 number) As you can see, TurboTax is somehow calculating 128,921 for Line 39, rather than 100,237! Over 28,000 difference!! This needs to be fixed for all of your clients using your software!!

I accidentally said that I can be claimed as someone else's dependent. Turbotax will not let me e-file without correcting this. I've gone back and made the change, but it still comes up during the review process and will not let me proceed. It will not let me file by mail either. It will not let me start over because I have already paid for the service. Is this a glitch? What is to be done?

To follow up on this, I got married in Dec 2024, filing jointly for 2024. My spouse received ~$4700 advance payment according to her 1095-A. When I add this information, the full amount is reflected as "federal tax due". When I check "yes" for married this year and select "Dec" for month, it only removes ~$300 due (meaning I still have to pay back ~$4400). Is this accurate? I feel like we should only be dinged for the months we were married (i.e., only Dec). Thanks for the help.

Are you asking how to check on a state tax refund? Some states are fairly quick with refunds, while other states can take a long time processing returns--even several weeks--as they crack down on detecting fraudulent returns. Here are some things you should check: First, you need to be sure your state return was successfully filed. If you efiled, be sure your efiled state return was accepted. If you used Online TurboTax, you can check by looking at the Tax Home in your Online account. Or did you choose to file by mail instead? TurboTax does not mail it for you. If you chose that method, you have to print, sign, date, and mail it. The FAQ below tells how to check on a state refund and has a link for your state. Then you'll see information for your state (which may include info on how long it takes in your state) and a link to go to your state's "Where's My Refund" tool. Your state may also have a FAQ section at it's "Where's My Refund" site that tells how long to expect in your state. Choose your state from the table in this FAQ: FAQ: How do I track my state refund? https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/track-state-refund/L3jgO8PGs_...

It appears from the Form 4868 Instructions that in order to apply for an extension that also covers your spouse then you have to enter "ITIN to be requested". If you file MFS and you spouse does not have and is not required to have an SSN or ITIN, then you enter "NRA" for the name of spouse under the MFS filing status check box. See the form 1040 instructions.
