Owe State taxes

Hi!  I need to figure out how to put an amount on W4 that will refund me.  I'm married filling jointly and 3 dependents under 18.  Should I just make myself single?

Owe State taxes

Form W-4 will only affect your federal taxes and withholdings, not your state.

Many states have a similar form to use to set withholding options on the state level.

But also, many states do not have as many credits and deductions that the federal government has. It's not unusual to get a refund on your federal return because of credits and yet still owe state taxes because there is no similar credit given by your state.

Owe State taxes

As indicated in this forum the W-4 is for Federal Taxes.   If you need to adjust your state withholding here is information for the state income taxes:   https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tips/state-taxes/what-are-state-income-taxes/L4O5May37 and the links to contact your state if applicable:  https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/help-article/payroll-compliance/payroll-tax-compli....
