Increasing amount of tax returns by selecting "0" exemptions

Hello,

I am single and file the EZ form. I want to ensure that I get the maximum amount I can for my returns. Is the way to do that by selecting "0" exemptions in my W-4?

Thank you,

Jessica

Increasing amount of tax returns by selecting "0" exemptions

Thank you for the question.  Form 1040EZ was a shortened version of Form 1040 for taxpayers with basic tax situations. The form was discontinued as of the 2018 tax year and replaced with the redesigned Form 1040.

Claiming zero on the W-4 was also largely discontinued with the W-4 changing as a result of the Tax Jobs and Cuts Act of 2017.

Completing a W-4 with only filling out Part 1 and then signing it although not truly claiming zero, is sometimes the same result.   Although I would not recommend it you can always add additional tax withholdings in Box 4 (c), which will boost the refund though may lead to a mismatching of income and expenses during the tax year.

Be well and safe @SabiT
