I am self-employed, part of my work involves business travel, I pay expenses myself and then am paid back, my understanding is my 1099 should not reflect the travel

If your 1099 reflects only the payments received for services, then you would not report the reimbursement as income and would not deduct the reimbursed travel expenses. 

 

If your 1099 includes the amounts of travel reimbursement, then you would want to deduct the travel expenses. In either case the net income would be the same.
