Foreign Earned Income and Self Employment Tax

My husband has been working in Hong Kong from 8/1/23 to now as a contractor. I understand his income is excluded from the foreign income, we filed Form 2555 for that income. But why self employment tax is not calculated for that income on Turbo Tax?

Can you help?

Foreign Earned Income and Self Employment Tax

Self-employment income must be entered in the correct section of TurboTax first.  Only then will the self-employment tax be generated correctly.

To do this, log back into TurboTax.  Follow the steps in this link to enter your self-employment activity.

  1. Once you have done that, go back to the foreign earned income exclusion section under Wages & Income.
  2. Select the section titled Less Common Income.
  3. Proceed through the screens to ensure your self-employment income is still reported here.
  4. Once you have done this, you should see the income exclusion but should also see the self-employment tax calculated.
