Amending returns

I amended my 2021 return online and mailed the documents to IRS this Oct. Do I need to wait for the amended return to be completed before I amend my 2022 return? Will my 2022 return be updated automatically on my turbox tax online account  after the 2021 amended return is processed?

Amending returns

Hi, wubeibei,
I believe you indicated that you amended your 2021 return online and mailed the amendment to the IRS this Oct and wanted to know if you needed to wait for the 2021 amendment to be processed before amending 2022. Great question!

Each year's tax return is separate and you can send in 2022 before 2021's amendment is processed.  The TurboTax site will only update to show whether a previously electronically submitted (pended) return was accepted or rejected if filed electronically.  We do not have any visibility to when the IRS processes a return and our site only updates for electronically filed returns. Mailed returns do not update status on our website.  Also, your 2021 amendment does NOT impact your 2022 filed TurboTax return automatically. If you wish to amend your 2022 return, you must indicate those changes yourself, via the program.  You can always reach out for help to an expert, if necessary, via this link which will take you to your account.

While each tax year is independent, and you can proceed with 2022 without waiting for the 2021 amendment to process (see IRS page for current estimated processing times) it's important to note that amendments may have interactions (e.g., changed carry forwards). If you do have an interaction between your 2022 and 2021 amendments, I would recommend including  a cover letter with your mailed 2022 amendment indicating when you submitted your 2021 amendment and the nature of the change in the 2021 amendment that will impact the 2022 amendment.

Hope this helps.
