15 year old first job

Hello,

I have a child who will begin her first job in June when she turns 15.  3 days a week, at $84 a day for five weeks only which is around $1,260.  Which is better to claim 0 or 1 on VA -4 Tax Form?  This is in Virginia.  Thanks.

According to https://www.tax.virginia.gov/who-must-file, VA filling requirement is $11,950 for a single taxpayer. If your 15 year old is going to make less than that the entire year then she could claim an exemption because she will be under the filling limit for the year. If she might make more for the 2024 tax year, then it is best to claim 1 on the VA-4P.

Good morning Mandy1979,

Thanks for joining us today.  I checked Virginia filing requirements.  Filing requirement for a Single person is $11,950 for 2023.  so for the amount of income your daughter will earn in 2024, she will not owe any tax to VA.

You may check the box on line 3, so they will not take any VA tax withholding.

Hope that helps!
