I filed my 2024 taxes just before the April deadline but a day or two later received in the mail a 1099-OID that I didn't know was coming and was also informed that one of my 1099-INT was incorrect and needed to be corrected. So now I need to file an amended return but I still have not received the corrected 1099-INT. I have contacted the company multiple times and they continue to drag their feet. What options do I have?
PER IRS GUIDELINES: When a payer is uncooperative about issuing a corrected tax form, you can contact the IRS for assistance. You should also proceed with filing an accurate amended tax return using the information you have available, including the new 1099-OID you received.
What to do about the uncorrected 1099-INT
Follow these steps to address the missing corrected 1099-INT:
Call the IRS for assistance. The IRS can contact the company on your behalf to request the missing corrected form.
Phone number:1-800-829-1040.
Wait until late February OR AFTERto contact the IRS if it is early in the tax season. For your 2024 taxes, the deadline for issuers to send 1099 forms was January 31, 2025. As you have already been waiting for a while, you can call now.
Provide the IRS with details. When you call, have your name, address, Social Security number, and the company's name and address ready.
File your amended return with your own estimate. You do not have to wait for the corrected form to file your amended return. The IRS advises taxpayers to file an accurate tax return with the information they have. You can use Form 1040-X to report the correct information, including the new 1099-OID and your best estimate of the corrected 1099-INT.
How to file your amended return
Wait for your original return to be processed. You must wait until your first tax return has been accepted by the IRS before you can file an amendment.
Use Form 1040-X.You can amend your return electronically using tax software or by mail. If your original return was e-filed, you can also e-file your 1040-X. If your original return was a paper filing, your amended return must also be mailed.
Include all relevant information. When you fill out Form 1040-X, you will need to enter the original figures from your first return and then the corrected amounts. You should now include the information from the new 1099-OID and your best estimate for the corrected 1099-INT.
Pay any additional taxes. If your amended return shows you owe more tax, pay it as soon as possible to avoid or minimize penalties and interest.
What if you get the corrected 1099-INT later? If the information on the corrected form differs significantly from what you reported, you may need to file asecondamended return. However, if the change is minor, the IRS may not require a second amendment.
