Credit score drops after paying student loans?

In January 2018 I finally paid off all of my federal student loans, after about 20 years of payments. I noticed right away that my credit score dropped considerably as if I had closed a credit account. Is still has not recovered completely from that. Is that what normally happens? Because if I had known, I would have kept on paying it for life : /
