How do I handle the 1099-T when I paid for some of the tuition and my son paid for some?

I am trying to enter the college expenses on both my tax form and my sons tax form. We received the 1099-T from the college but it does not reflect who really paid. I paid for about $30,000 of it through the 529 dispersal, but my son paid for $6000 of it directly out of his own savings.

How do I reflect the proper payments for both his and my tax forms?

Are you claiming your son as a dependent on your taxes?

Yes - he will be a dependent on my tax form.

Then you claim it all.

Even though $6000 of it was his own money? Why wouldn't he want some portion of it on his own tax form?

As for being on mine, it looks like we may exceed the earnings limit and cant claim anything on ours.
