On my 1098-t It says the scholarships grants exceeded payments received by the school. But I paid out of pocket after the scholarships were applied. Is this right?

Box 1 says 34,202.18 Box 5 says 35,956.94 I made a payment of 2500 this fall (the amount of my tuition and other fees not covered by scholarship). So i am confused how grants and scholarships could exceed expenses paid to university.
