My son shows denied the American Opportunity Tax credit for this year but has only been in college for less than three years.

I checked my previous three tax returns to verify and he's only claimed the APT credit for two previous years. Any help? Turbo Tax shows he's claimed it four years.

To be eligible for AOTC, the student must not have claimed the AOTC for more than four tax years OR finished the first four years of higher education at the start of the tax year.

But if you just need to change your entry in TurboTax:

  1. Sign in and Continue your/take me to my return
  2. Go to Federal Taxes, then Deductions and Credits
  3. Edit/Add/Start for Expenses and Scholarships (Form 1098-T)
  4. On Your Education Expenses Summary, Edit or Add Another Student
  5. (enter tuition/scholarship/other information) Edit Education Information
  6. TurboTax will ask: 'Did You Ever Receive the American Opportunity or Hope Credit?' Answer Yes, enter # of years. TurboTax will choose the deduction or credit that saves you the most in tax payments.
